Drum Class Info

Any type of hand drum is fine for the class, including tupperware and boxes. Some loaner items are available if you have nothing suitable.

This class is intended for the dancer needing to better understand rhythms, or the SCA hand-drummer/drum circle type person. Proper striking technique and drum selection will be addressed. Rhythms will also be presented in finger cymbal format featuring the new handout!

Great for dancers to understand the rhythms we dance to, great for starting drummers. Everyone welcome... women, men, well-behaved and interested kids.

Class runs 2:30 hours this time. $25. The next scheduled class is Sunday Nov 18, 2007, 11-1:30 at Saqra's Studio (http://www.saqra.net/lastoasis.html for directions). Email saqra@saqra.net for pre-registration, or just show up!

We will go from complete newbie material through a gazillion rhythms.

The rhythms to be covered are a combination of the rhythms most commonly used for Middle Eastern dance including:

• "Beledi" - properly known as Masmoudi Sagir

  Saidi

  Maksoum

• Chiftatelli - a Turkish/Greek rhythm

• "Masmoudi" - Masmoudi Kabir

• Ayoub - a hot 2/4 with variations

• Bolero - commonly used in Egyptian music

• Karsilima 9/8 (Turkish)

• Sulukule 9/8 (Modern Turkish)

• Persian 6/8

• Moroccan 6/8

  and more.

Students receive written rhythm lists. Class will go as far as the experience and aptitude of the students allows during that class period.

Saqra has been playing keyboards since 1968, writing and arranging music since 1970, playing violin since 1973, brass instruments since 1975 classical acoustic and electrical guitar and bass since 1976, belly dancing since 1977, playing dumbek since 1986.
